All About Me

Hello my name is Michelle Hickmott, I have a passion for making beautiful cakes, I love making and designing something different for someone's special occasion.

I also love making sugar flowers and have been teaching people how to make their own, this has given me so much pleasure, the satisfaction I get when one of my students beams with pride and hold their finished flower is something that cannot be explained

My Story
At the age of fifty I suffered a massive brain bleed, an amorism burst in the centre of my brain leaving me for dead,
The bleed was so bad that my family were told there was no hope for me to recover and if I did, I would be in a vegetable state. As you can see, I did recover, it took a lot of work and support, I had to re-learn practically everything from learning to walk even doing the most basic things like washing my hair, which was harder than you think, it took several years to get back to some normality.
I couldn’t go back to my old life so I had to find something that I could do, I had always had a fascination for people who made sugar flowers, so I started watching You Tube videos, I purchased some basic tools and some sugar paste and I started to practice, I made my first rose and that was it, I was hooked, I then started to look for tutorials from experts in this field, I had lessons with the very best, Robert Haynes, Alan Dunn, Arati Mirji and so many more, I learnt so much from them.
I became obsessed with making flowers so much so that I entered competitions, (very scary). My first competition was with Cake International, I had never heard of Cake International but I thought it was a good place to start, looking at the other competition exhibits, I worked myself into a very nervous state (I started to doubt myself, what had I done, I feel so stupid, there was no way my work was up to other people’s competition work) it was a disaster, or so I thought until I returned to my exhibit to see a bronze award. The joy, I couldn’t believe it, they must have made a mistake, I couldn’t take it in, I couldn’t stop smiling, I phoned my husband, he couldn’t believe it either (Ha Ha).
I continued to enter competitions and did well, my passion turned to wanting to teach other people how to make beautiful flowers, I opened a studio up in Tunbridge Wells and began teaching.
So, this is my story.
One thing I would like to say is that we all suffer with problems in life, but if we start to believe in ourselves, show each other kindness and patience there is no end to what we can achieve. So come and join me in one of my classes, I would love to meet you.
My husband and I decided to move to Wales, and I’m happy to say that we are now extremely happy residents.
